Srinagar, Mar 26 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 367 registered dairy units, with Srinagar (76) and Jammu (89) leading in numbers, according to the latest data provided by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Among the other districts, Kathua (30), Pulwama (29), and Ganderbal (25) also have a significant number of licensed dairy units. However, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), some districts, including Doda, Shopian, Poonch, and Kishtwar, have as few as one or two registered units, indicating a disparity in dairy sector development across the Union Territory. To ensure quality control in dairy products such as milk, cheese, and butter, the FSSAI is responsible for setting food safety standards and regulating dairy production across India. The government has taken several initiatives to upgrade dairy infrastructure and enhance product safety, including strengthening milk testing facilities from the village level to the state level to ensure quality control. “Supporting dairy cooperatives to increase market access and improve processing infrastructure,” it added—(KNO)
